Indian shoe size chart in US sizes
Uses your brand settings from the converter. The size you last converted is highlighted.
Quick answer: Indian shoe sizes follow the UK system. For men, add 1 to get the US size (India 8 = US 9). For women, add 2 (India 5 = US 7). For kids, add about half a size (India 10C = US 10.5C). Going the other way, subtract. Brands vary by up to half a size, so for Nike, Adidas or Regal use the brand setting in the converter above.
Indian to American Shoe Size Conversion
India doesn’t have its own shoe size scale in shops yet. Almost every Indian brand, including Bata, Metro, Campus, Liberty, Red Chief and Woodland, sells in UK sizes, and calls them Indian sizes. So converting an Indian size to American is really converting UK to US. The gap depends on who the shoe is for:
| Category | Indian → US rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Men | Add 1 | India 8 → US 9 |
| Women | Add 2 (Nike +2½, Adidas +1½) | India 5 → US 7 |
| Kids (little and big) | Add ½ (some charts add 1) | India 10C → US 10.5C |
US and UK sizes both step in barleycorns (⅓ inch, about 8.5 mm), so a gap of one size means the same length difference in both systems. Only the starting point differs.
US to Indian Shoe Size Conversion
Reverse the rules: subtract 1 from a US men’s size, 2 from a US women’s size, and about ½ from a US kids’ size. A US men’s 10 is India 9. A US women’s 8 is India 6. A US 1Y (youth) is India/UK 13.5C or 1. This matters most when you buy from American sites or bring shoes from the US, where boxes show US sizes first. Many global brands print US, UK and EU on the label, and the UK number is your Indian size.
Indian Men’s Shoe Size to US
| India / UK | US men’s | EU (about) | Foot length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 6 | 38 | 23.7 cm · 9.33 in |
| 6 | 7 | 39–40 | 24.6 cm · 9.67 in |
| 7 | 8 | 40–41 | 25.4 cm · 10.00 in |
| 8 | 9 | 42 | 26.2 cm · 10.33 in |
| 9 | 10 | 43 | 27.1 cm · 10.67 in |
| 10 | 11 | 44–44.5 | 27.9 cm · 11.00 in |
| 11 | 12 | 45–46 | 28.8 cm · 11.33 in |
| 12 | 13 | 47 | 29.6 cm · 11.67 in |
Foot lengths follow the Brannock rule (US men’s size = 3 × foot length in inches − 22). Brand charts can differ by 2–5 mm, so if you’re near a boundary, check the brand’s own chart. Adidas is the main exception: its men’s US is only half a size above UK (UK 8 = US 8.5).
Indian Women’s Shoe Size to US
| India / UK | US women’s | Nike US | EU (about) | Foot length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 5 | 5.5 | 35.5–36 | 22.0 cm |
| 4 | 6 | 6.5 | 37 | 22.9 cm |
| 5 | 7 | 7.5 | 38 | 23.7 cm |
| 6 | 8 | 8.5 | 39–39.5 | 24.6 cm |
| 7 | 9 | 9.5 | 40.5 | 25.4 cm |
| 8 | 10 | 10.5 | 42 | 26.2 cm |
| 9 | 11 | 11.5 | 43 | 27.1 cm |
Watch out for “Indian” women’s labels. Most brands use the UK number. A few don’t. Regal’s women’s chart, for example, lists UK 5 as India 7 (and US 7.5, EU 38). If a women’s size looks 2 bigger than you expect, set Women’s Indian label to “India = UK + 2” in the converter.
Indian Kids’ Shoe Size to US
Kids’ shoes use a separate child scale, marked C or K, from about UK 3C for babies up to 13.5C. After that the numbers restart at 1Y (youth, or “big kids”), which joins the adult scale. So a child grows from 13.5C to 1Y, 2Y, and on to adult 5–7.
| India / UK | US (Nike, Adidas) | EU | Foot length | Typical age |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5C | 5.5C | 21.5 | 12.7 cm | 1–2 years |
| 7C | 7.5C | 24 | 14.4 cm | 2–3 years |
| 9C | 9.5C | 26.5 | 16.1 cm | 3–5 years |
| 11C | 11.5C | 29 | 17.8 cm | 5–6 years |
| 13C | 13.5C | 31.5 | 19.5 cm | 7–8 years |
| 1Y | 1.5Y | 33 | 20.3 cm | 8–9 years |
| 3Y | 3.5Y | 35.5 | 22.0 cm | 10–12 years |
Ages are only a rough guide, because children’s feet grow at very different rates. Always measure, and leave about 1–1.5 cm (a thumb’s width) of growing room.
Indian Shoe Size Chart in US Sizes
The Full size chart tab above has the complete Indian shoe size chart in US sizes, in half sizes, for men (UK 5–14), women (UK 2–11) and kids (3C–6Y). It includes EU sizes and foot length in centimetres and inches. It follows your brand settings, so you can see a Nike-style or Adidas-style chart. The size you last converted is highlighted.
How to Convert Indian Shoe Size to US Size
- Work out the scale. Is it a men’s, women’s or kids’ shoe? Unisex sneakers usually use men’s sizing.
- Treat the Indian size as UK, unless the brand’s chart says otherwise.
- Add the offset: +1 for men, +2 for women, +½ for kids. Adjust for the brand (Adidas men +½, Adidas women +1½, Nike women +2½).
- Check the foot length on the brand’s chart if one is given. Centimetres are the most reliable measure across brands.
Under the hood, UK and US sizes both come from the length of the last (the foot-shaped mould a shoe is built on), in barleycorns of ⅓ inch. The UK adult formula is size = 3 × last length in inches − 25. US men’s is UK + 1, and US women’s about UK + 1.5 to 2.5 depending on the brand. EU sizes use Paris points of ⅔ cm (size = 1.5 × last length in cm), which is why EU sizes don’t line up neatly with UK or US.
How to Measure Your Foot for Shoe Size
- Measure at the end of the day. Feet swell by several millimetres after walking.
- Wear the socks you’ll use: thin socks for formal shoes, sports socks for running shoes.
- Stand with your heel against a wall on a sheet of paper, with your weight on that foot.
- Mark your longest toe. It isn’t always the big toe. Measure from the wall to the mark in a straight line.
- Measure the width across the widest part (the ball of the foot), if you often find shoes tight.
- Do both feet and use the longer one. A few millimetres’ difference is normal.
Then use the Find size by measuring tab. It rounds up to the next half size so your shoe is never shorter than your foot, and flags if you’re close to the next size.
Indian Shoe Size vs. US Shoe Size
| Indian (UK) sizing | US sizing | |
|---|---|---|
| Step between sizes | ⅓ inch (8.47 mm) | ⅓ inch (8.47 mm) |
| Men and women | Same numbers at most brands | Women’s are 1.5–2.5 higher |
| Kids | Child sizes to 13.5, then 1 | Child sizes (C) to 13.5, then youth (Y) from 1 |
| Widths | Rarely labelled; many Indian models run wider | Letters: B/D standard, 2E/4E wide |
| Same foot, men | 8 | 9 |
Width is the other big difference. A CSIR-CLRI survey scanned the feet of more than 100,000 people between December 2021 and March 2022. It found Indian feet tend to be wider than European or American feet, and that many people wear shoes that are too long just to get enough width. That led to a proposed Indian sizing system called “Bha” (from Bharat), with eight sizes from infants to adult men, which was sent to the Bureau of Indian Standards. Until brands adopt it, if US-made shoes feel tight across the ball of your foot, look for wide (E or 2E) versions rather than going up a full size.
Indian to US Shoe Size Conversion FAQs
What is Indian size 8 in US shoe size?
For men, Indian size 8 is US 9. For women, Indian size 8 is usually US 10, because women’s US sizes run about 2 higher than UK and Indian sizes. Nike puts it at US 10.5 and Adidas at US 9.5.
Is Indian shoe size the same as UK size?
Yes, for most brands. India uses the UK sizing system, so a men’s India 8 is a UK 8. A few brands label women’s shoes differently. Regal, for example, calls UK 5 an India 7, so always check the brand’s chart for women’s shoes.
How do I convert US shoe size to Indian size?
For men, subtract 1 (US 10 = India 9). For women, subtract 2 (US 7 = India 5). For kids, subtract about half a size. The converter above also lets you pick Nike or Adidas offsets, which differ slightly.
What is the difference between men’s and women’s US sizes?
For the same foot, a women’s US size is usually 1.5 to 2 sizes higher than a men’s US size. A men’s US 8 fits roughly like a women’s US 9.5 to 10. In India and the UK, most brands use the same numbers for both.
What are C and Y in kids’ shoe sizes?
C means child or little kids (roughly sizes 3C to 13.5C), and Y means youth or big kids (1Y to 6Y). After 13.5C the numbers restart at 1Y, which is the smallest size on the adult scale.
Should I choose the bigger size if I’m between sizes?
Usually yes, especially for sports shoes, long walks or if your feet are wide. Your feet also swell during the day, so measure in the evening and size for your longer foot.
Does India have its own shoe size system?
One has been proposed. CSIR-CLRI scanned the feet of over 100,000 people and proposed “Bha”, an Indian sizing system designed for wider Indian feet, and sent it to the Bureau of Indian Standards. Until brands adopt it, Indian shoes are sold in UK sizes.
Is EU 42 the same as India 8?
Roughly, for men’s shoes: EU 42 is about UK/India 8 and US 9. EU sizes step in smaller increments (6.7 mm), so brands round differently, and EU 42 can be India 7.5 or 8 depending on the brand.
